Ranch Sorting is the brain child of Bud Gibson.  His goal with this new event is to encourage riders to become better at handling and working cattle while having fun with their horses and other riders.

The first event was in the spring of 2008 and it began with three man teams with three gates..  Cattle could only be taken out through the middle gate.  This proved to be difficult so at the next event there was a lane added.  Now the cutter needed to cut the cow, bring it up the lane by itself (more than one will lead to a disqualification "DQ"), then out the center gate.  This still proved to be difficult.  The third event became a four man team instead of three with the lane and gates as previously described.  This worked.

There were a total of four Ranch Sortings in 2008.  The last event on Thanksgiving weekend showed participants were improving and catching onto this new event.

The first Ranch Sorting the winning team was able to get 3 or 4 through and the last event the winning team got 8 through.  Vast improvement and great fun was had by all.

Ranch Sorting 2009 will be even better and we hope that anyone interested will come and play.  This series will be awarding a buckle to the highest earner in the Pro and Novice Division at the end.  We will post winnings here for all to keep track of who might win.

Winners on April 4th:

Pro/Novice: Jim Duffy (pro), Jessica Keawe-Reuter, Ben Char, and Richard Nakamoto

Novice/Novice: John DeLima, Gary Silva, Billiann Kuranishi, and Candi Smith, J& L Ranch

Draw Pot: Roberta Rita (pro), Richard Nakamoto, Pam Rivera, and Jessica Keawe-Reuter

Leaders for the buckle series:  Jim Duffy is leading in the Pro Division with Roberta Rita not far behind in second.  Tied for the Novice Division is Jessica Keawe-Reuter and Richard Nakamoto

To qualify for the buckle series and prizes you need to participate in three of the five events.  So far we have the following sponsors: Anderson Hay and Grain Company, Inc., New Town and Country, Ham’s Flats, Oahu Equine Veterinary, Waimanalo Feed, and Gayle and Mike Fujita Ramsey, Realty Executives, Oahu.

RULES:

1.       4 man teams, Open Teams unlimited Pros, Pro/Novice Teams are allowed a maximum of 2 pros,

2.       No roughing cattle or horses,

3.       The person going in through the center gate starts the clock and must cut the first cow,

4.       2 minute time limit unless otherwise discussed at the beginning of the event,

5.       Only one cow can enter the lane at a time… if you are or a member of the team is the cause of the cattle running through the lane your team will be disqualified.  Should the cattle leak into the lane on their own the team is allowed to push the cattle back and cut another.  This sounds like it is a judgment call; however if you know cattle and you are watching you can determine this easily,

6.       Once the cow has gone through the lane it is allowed to be brought out through the center gate,

7.       If the cow returns to the herd you are not required to bring this cow out you can choose another; however, you must now take the new cow through the lane and then out the center gate.

8.       Everyone stays in the arena during the event and everyone is asked to keep their horses butts along the back of the arena and no riding, warming up, or schooling of your horse is allowed at this time in case you cause the cattle to run back to the herd.

9.       Bud reviews the rules at each event and encourages all questions to be asked at the beginning of the event for all to hear and learn from.

I hope I haven’t forgotten any and please forgive me if I have.  Come to the event it is a lot easier to understand once you see it.

If you have never participated but are interested or if you would like to improve and get better... we have just the thing for you.  Schoolings in a group of 8 with Bud Gibson for only $65.00.  The schoolings last approximately 3 hours.  Everyone who has participated so far all feel that they walked away with loads of information and insight.  If you are interested please contact Gayle at 388-1485 or email gfujita@hawaii.rr.com to sign up.

Come and play!
